Mustang Run

My newest painting:

"Mustang Run"
24 X 36 acrylic
by Craig Willms

Here's something a little different for me... It's my first attempt at impressionism. It was quite difficult for me not go into extreme detail. I was almost like forcing myself to be a little sloppy. Despite my reticence to call it done I was really happy with the way this came out. It is a gift for my sister, a horse owner.

Hero's Savior

Check out more of my art here:

 "Hero's Savior"
20 x 24 acrylic
by Craig Willms
2013

This was commissioned by my friend and co-worker Al. A long time fireman Al has lots of great stories of his time in the hot coals and falling ashes. He came up with the idea based on 2 different paintings he liked. I cannot claim the concept or the original idea, I unfortunately don't know who the artists are.

"The Blue and Gold"
30" x 48"
(acrylic)
2013
by
Craig Willms

From a photo found online, original photographer unknown to me.

A new painting that took me nearly a year to complete. I was so frustrated with finding/mixing the right color blue for the bird's plumage that the painting sat idle for 6 months. I eventually decided that I had to go with what I had. The blue is not as striking as would have liked but the painting, I think, turned out well.

The Sun Sets on the Mariner

"The Sun Sets on the Mariner"

18 x 24 acrylic
by Craig Willms
2010

Here's a new painting I recently finished as part of my Vacation Photo Project. This scene I'm told is a sunset viewed from "The Mariner" a Door County hotel on Lake Michigan. Sadly The Mariner has since closed... Inspired by an excellent photo shot by frequent Mariner guest Mike Wagner.

Please visit my online art gallery Static Art to see more of the project.

Times Square

A new painting to feast your eyes upon...

"Times Square"

24" X 30"
acrylic on canvas
by Craig Willms
2010

This scene is another submitted to my Vacation Photo Project. Taken in 2009 by a friend at work I was instantly drawn to the colors and the multi-point perspectives. The other thing I liked was the aspect that this is a moment in history with its timeless commercial icons and the in-the-moment Broadway productions being advertised. I hope you enjoy.

In The Shadow of The Tetons

"In the Shadow of the Tetons"

18 X 24 (acrylic)
2008
by
Craig Willms

This new painting is based on a fine vacation photo by Sue Allhiser, my friend and insurance agent. I must say the composition of the photo was near perfect, an impressive image that I can only hope I captured here...

Mr. Eagle and Mr. Fox Argue Over Dinner

"Mr. Eagle and Mr. Fox Argue Over Dinner"

18 X 24 (acrylic)

by Craig Willms
2010

This painting was inspired by a photo taken by Pekka Komi. It was one in a series of incredible action shots of this eagle and this fox wrestling over a carcass. The photos have caused quite a buzz on the Internet as some thought they were doctored. Viewed as a series the validity of those claims is destroyed. I hope you enjoy!

Heaven On Ice

"Heaven On Ice"

18 x 24 (acrylic)

2009
by Craig Willms

Here is perhaps the strangest painting I've ever done. Heaven On Ice will resonate with those of you who cherish a sunny winter's day by dropping a line in a hole in the ice and then taking a pull from a flask filled with peppermint schnapps. This was commissioned by my brother Ken who is just such a person. The photo was taken by S. Rasmussen.

This is the newest entry in my Vacation Photo Project. CLICK HERE to see the paintings I've already presented.

The Moab Trip

A New Painting

"The Moab Trip"

18x24 (acrylic)
2010

by Craig Willms

This is a vacation photo supplied by my good friend Lorenzo. That's his Jeep. This was one of among many awesome photos from his Moab, Utah trip. I choose this one because it epitomizes the key element of the trip - off roading with his Jeep. I hope you enjoy!

The Black Dog

A new painting:

"The Black Dog"
18 X 24 acrylic

2009
by Craig Willms

This is the first grayscale painting I've ever attempted. It won't be my last. It was very satisfying. I really enjoyed the challenge of using just 2 tubes of paint. This is another entry in my Vacation Photo Project. Click HERE to see the paintings I already presented.

New Painting: Hydra

"Hydra"

18 x 24 acrylic
by Craig Willms
(click on the picture for a larger view)

Here is my latest painting. It was commissioned by a dear, dear friend. This is a hillside city on the Greek island Hydra. I felt the subject matter had a very cool abstract quality to it. It was inspired by a Georges Meis photo. I hope you enjoy.

Here now the latest painting from my Vacation Photo project. This excellent subject comes our way from my friend Jeff Lynn. This was the view from the honeymoon suite in a Costa Rican resort at the foot of Mt. Arenal. I hope you enjoy!

Best Friend In God's Country

A new painting...

"Best Friend In God's Country"
18X24 (acrylic)
2009
(click on the image for a larger view)
Based on photos by Jason Lance.

This is part of my continuing series of paintings based on vacation photo's submitted to me. When finished I give the painting to whomever submitted the photo - no charge. For one, I love the challenge of painting something that I didn't choose. Also, I want to get my art work distributed and I have no need to be financially rewarded for it, my reward is the smile and appreciation of the commissioner.

Here are links to the previous paintings in this series.

"A View From Doyle's"

PAINTING: Eagle Harbor Lighthouse

"Eagle Harbor Lighthouse"
18X24 (acrylic)
2008

Here's a new painting for your pleasure. I was really pleased with the way this one turned out. For some reason I really like lighthouses as art. I suppose it's the beauty of human architecture against the awesome background of the natural world. This painting was based on a photo by Paul Lemke. I hope you enjoy.
